Before I knew it, the day had gone by in a flash. There had been brief moments of restroom breaks, snacks, and to let Snooky go outside a few times, but the rest of the time, I spent reading up on my family’s history.

To say my mind was overloaded would be an understatement. The Knight’s had originally moved from Ireland, and when they got here, they’d formed an alliance with ‘others’ like them, ie. not human.

The women of the family always had magic, but it seemed to skip the men every few generations. The family tree was extensive, but as it moved toward to the present, it got smaller and smaller, until it was just Aunt Laura and Mom.

It was shocking to realize I really had no other family out there. Even though I had grown up knowing that, it still hit hard. I didn’t have any information about my dad’s family either.

Even though this was all still new and strange, I was surprisingly fine about learning I was from a family of witches and the things that go bump in the night were real. Although, I knew that last part was true because of him.

Glancing at the clock, I was surprised to see that most of the day was gone. I’d meant to text Sora to see if she’d come over to answer some questions. I hoped it wasn’t too late.

I pulled up her number and sent her a quick text asking if now was a good time to talk. I didn’t have to wait long before my phone rang.

“Hello?”

“Evelyn! What’s up? Anytime is a good time to talk.” Sora’s happy voice was so loud, I had to hold the phone away from my ear and I could still hear her clearly.

“Hi. So, I know I’m going to see you tomorrow, but I wanted to talk about the grimoire that Aunt Laura left me. I touched the binding on it, and it…well, it changed into a different book,” I said, piling some of the pillows behind me so that I could sit up more.

“Ah.” She paused. “You read the letter?”

“Yes. It’s a lot to take in.” I picked up the grimoire and flipped through the pages as I placed the phone on speaker. “I read about you and Aunt Laura. I’m sorry for your loss. She thought the world of you, I could tell from just the few words.”

A sharp intake of breath was followed by a soft sob, and I put the grimoire down.

“Sora? Can I do anything?”

It took a minute, but on the other side of the phone, I could hear some water running. “No. Thank you for letting me have that little moment. I wasn’t sure if she’d tell you or not, but I shouldn’t be surprised. That woman didn’t care who knew. She’d have shouted it at the top of the world.”

I chuckled at the image. “I would’ve liked to meet her. Maybe you can tell me more about her.”

“Oh.” I could hear her voice waver.
